🚫 Why We Never Use Sealants or Adhesives
Using silicone sealants or roof tile adhesives on slates is not a reliable repair method and should be avoided.
- Short-term fix only: These products break down rapidly under UV exposure, frost, and moisture.
- Slate slips again: Without a mechanical fixing, the slate will eventually slide out, risking leaks and damage.
- Not compliant: Such repairs do not meet best practice or insurance standards and may devalue heritage properties.

🛠️ Best Practice for Roof Slate Repairs
We follow strict traditional methods in line with BS 5534 and conservation guidance:
- Strip out in diamonds: Damaged slates are removed in a diamond pattern, maintaining the roof’s structural hierarchy.
- Use of copper nails: Non-corrosive and long-lasting, copper nails are essential for fixing new slates.
- Slate steps & hooks: When slates cannot be nailed (e.g. in middle of a run), we use discreet slate steps or copper hooks to insert replacements without disturbing the courses.
