New Leadwork or Leadwork Repair?

For fully supported rolled lead sheet roof and wall coverings, the principal British code of practice is BS 6915:2001+A1:2014 – Design and construction of fully supported lead sheet roof and wall coverings.

The standard addresses the principles involved in designing and constructing fully supported lead coverings, including the relationship between the lead sheet, supporting substrate, fixings and movement.

Rolled Lead Sheet

BS EN 12588 Lead Sheet

Rolled lead sheet used for building work is manufactured to BS EN 12588:2006 – Lead and lead alloys. Rolled lead sheet for building purposes.

The standard defines requirements relating to the rolled lead material itself, including designation, chemical composition, surface condition and dimensional tolerances.

This distinction is useful: BS EN 12588 concerns the material, while BS 6915 addresses the design and construction of fully supported lead sheet coverings.

Correct material is therefore only the starting point. Even high-quality rolled lead sheet can fail prematurely where it is incorrectly sized, restrained or detailed.

Lead Design

Why Thermal Movement Matters in Leadwork

Lead sheet changes dimension as its temperature changes. A well-designed detail allows this movement to occur without repeatedly concentrating stress at fixings, corners or joints.

Problems can develop where:

  • Individual sheets are too large

Choosing the Correct Code of Lead

Rolled lead sheet is commonly identified by a code that relates to its nominal thickness and weight.

Different applications can require different lead codes depending upon the size and geometry of the detail, exposure, fixing method and the movement that must be accommodated.

The objective is not simply to use the heaviest lead possible. The material should be appropriate to the detail and installed within recommended sheet dimensions.

Lead bay roofs are a common feature on traditional properties throughout York.

Although often relatively small, a bay roof contains several important junctions: the lead covering itself, the rear wall abutment, window or cornice details, side upstands and the front drip.
